Masinloc Was Founded in 1607

The strongest sources reviewed for this project identify 1607 as Masinloc's founding year. Emmanuel Luis A. Romanillos's study of the Recollect mission states that Fray Andrés del Espíritu Santo founded Masinloc that year. DILG Zambales also lists Masinloc among the province's earliest towns and gives 1607 as its establishment year.

The frequently repeated year 1572 belongs to an earlier and different event: Spanish exploration in the wider Zambales region under Juan de Salcedo. No source reviewed connects that expedition with the establishment of the town of Masinloc.

What happened in 1607

Fray Andrés reached Masinloc by sea with Fray Jerónimo de Cristo. The historical study identifies Andrés as founder of the new pueblo and builder of its first church, a light-material structure that did not survive. The stone San Andres Church now associated with the town belongs to a later building period.

For the documented town, the correct year is 1607.

The reviewed sources establish the year but do not provide a verified month and day. Publishing 1607 without inventing greater precision is therefore the responsible choice.

A founding date is not the beginning of a people

Calling 1607 the founding year refers to the documented colonial mission town. Sambal and Aeta communities were already part of the Zambales landscape. Correcting 1572 does not erase that older presence; it prevents colonial exploration from being mistaken for the birth of Masinloc.
